IFTA fuel tax rates by state

IFTA fuel tax rates change every quarter. The tables below list the 3Q 2026 rate for each member state and all 10 Canadian provinces in US dollars per gallon, taken from the official IFTA Inc. tax rate matrix and effective Jul 1, 2026 through Sep 30, 2026. Alaska, Hawaii, and District of Columbia are not IFTA members and publish no rates in the matrix.

3Q 2026 rates: US member states

USD per gallon (the U.S. line of the IFTA matrix). Alternative-fuel rates for some jurisdictions are per gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE) or diesel gallon equivalent (DGE) per that jurisdiction's footnote on the matrix page.

Looking for one jurisdiction, or your own quarterly total? Pull a single figure from the IFTA tax rate lookup or run the numbers on your miles with the IFTA calculator instead of scanning the whole matrix.

A null rate means the jurisdiction publishes no rate for that fuel type in the IFTA matrix (blank cell as published). No cell was unreadable; nothing was estimated.

IFTA Inc. states this matrix is not final until September 4, 2026. Jurisdictions may still post 3Q2026 updates; matrix page last updated 2026-07-17 (14 jurisdictions updated, 4 rate changes). Check back after that date, and again at the start of each quarter, before you file.

Surcharge jurisdictions: Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia

Surcharge jurisdiction: this amount is reported and paid on the IFTA return in addition to the base rate; it is not collected at the pump.

IFTA surcharge rates, 3Q 2026 (USD per gallon), reported on the return in addition to the base rate. A blank cell means the jurisdiction publishes no surcharge for that fuel.

Budget for the surcharge when you plan routes through these three states, and remember that fuel tax is only one line on the quarterly return. Miles in Kentucky also feed its weight-distance tax, covered on our weight-distance tax states comparison.

Canadian member provinces

The ten Canadian provinces are full IFTA members, and their rates appear in the same matrix converted to US dollars per gallon. Published on the 3Q2026 matrix as 'Exchange Rate*: U.S.= 1.3984 / Canada = 0.7151', sourced by IFTA Inc. from www.federalreserve.gov. Per IFTA procedure P1020 the rate is the U.S. Federal Reserve Board index rate at noon Eastern time on the third Monday of the month immediately preceding the quarter.

How the quarterly cycle works

Under IFTA you hold one fuel tax license from your base state, file one quarterly return, and the states settle up with each other behind the scenes. Your return applies each jurisdiction's rate from this matrix to the miles you ran and the fuel you bought there, so the numbers above decide what you owe or get back each quarter. To run that math on your own miles, use the IFTA calculator, or pull a single jurisdiction's figure from the IFTA tax rate lookup.

IFTA is one piece of a heavy truck's recurring paperwork. The same trucks usually carry apportioned plates, compared state by state in our IRP registration guide, owe the annual federal highway use tax filed on Form 2290, and pay the yearly UCR fee for the fleet. New to all of it? Start with how to get your own authority.

Frequently asked questions

How often do IFTA fuel tax rates change?

Member jurisdictions can change their rates every quarter. The current matrix covers 3Q 2026 and runs from Jul 1, 2026 through Sep 30, 2026. IFTA Inc. posts each new quarter's rates on its tax rate matrix at iftach.org, so check back at the start of every quarter before you file.

Which states are not IFTA members?

Alaska, Hawaii, and District of Columbia do not belong to IFTA and publish no rates in the matrix. IFTA membership covers the 48 contiguous US states and 10 Canadian provinces.

What is an IFTA surcharge?

Three jurisdictions (Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia) publish a separate surcharge line in the matrix. Surcharge jurisdiction: this amount is reported and paid on the IFTA return in addition to the base rate; it is not collected at the pump.

Why does Oregon publish no rate in the matrix?

Oregon leaves its rate cells blank because it collects its Weight-Mile Tax from heavy trucks instead of a per-gallon fuel tax. Per ODOT: Oregon-based interstate carriers license IFTA through ODOT CCD (Schedule A combined IRP/IFTA application). Oregon IFTA accounts still file Oregon weight-mile tax reports in addition to quarterly IFTA fuel tax reports, because Oregon taxes heavy vehicles by weight and distance rather than at the pump.

Are the 3Q 2026 rates final?

IFTA Inc. states this matrix is not final until September 4, 2026. Jurisdictions may still post 3Q2026 updates; matrix page last updated 2026-07-17 (14 jurisdictions updated, 4 rate changes). Check back after that date, and again at the start of each quarter, before you file.
