A single-trip oversize permit base fee runs from $5 (Florida, Hawaii) to $75 (Ohio). Legal width is 8 ft 6 in in nearly every state, and legal height clusters around 13 ft 6 in. The table below lists the base fee, both limits, and the issuing agency for all 50 states and DC, with a source behind every cell.

Fees below are the base charge for one oversize move at the lowest permit tier the state publishes. Overweight, superload, and multi-month permits cost more; the state-by-state notes after the table spell out those add-ons.

How to read this table
Legal width and legal height are the thresholds where a permit becomes mandatory: stay at or under both (and under the length and weight limits) and you run permit-free. The base fee is the cheapest single-move permit the state publishes, so treat it as the floor, not the invoice. Weight-based surcharges are where the real money goes on overweight moves.
The max semitrailer length column is the most comparable length figure across states; the escort triggers column flags whether a state publishes width, height, or length thresholds that force a pilot car or police escort. Both are filled where an agency or statute states them; a dash means the figure is not published in a single comparable form, and the per-state oversize page carries the full length-by-configuration and escort tables.
Maine, Massachusetts, Utah show “varies, see agency” because no flat fee appears on an official source for them; the link goes straight to the office that quotes the fee. Fee and limit notes, state by state
The one-line fee in the table hides real structure: weight tiers, superload thresholds, annual-permit options, and, where the agency publishes them, escort triggers. Open a state for the detail its agency or statute publishes.
Alabama (AL)
Fees are category-based under Ala. Admin. Code r. 450-3-1-.09: 'other oversized loads' $20.00; 'other overweight loads' $10.00; overweight tiers $10 (80,001-100,000 lbs) to $100 (150,001+ lbs); +$10 when an overweight load is also over legal length, height, or width. $20 is the base single-trip oversize fee, sourced from a Cornell LII reproduction of the administrative code, not the ALDOT fee page.
Ala. Code 32-9-20: 102 in (8.5 ft) width on lanes 12 ft or wider (96 in on narrower lanes); height 13 1/2 ft including load. Sourced from an Onecle reproduction of the statute.
Alaska (AK)
Basic processing charge for a single-move oversize-only permit is $40 (overweight-only also $40; oversize AND overweight $70), plus surcharges of $25 to $35 for width over 10 ft 6 in, height over 16 ft (over 17 ft on the Dalton/Elliott corridor), or gross weight of 150,000 lb or more. Fee schedule effective February 29, 2016, matching 17 AAC 25.320; permits issued online at akswoop.com.
Legal height is 15 ft statewide (17 AAC 25.012(b)); 17 ft allowed between the Fox Weigh Station and Prudhoe Bay on the Dalton and Elliott Highways. Legal width is 102 inches (17 AAC 25.012(a)).

Arizona (AZ)
Class A single-trip overdimensional permit is $15; a Class A overweight permit is $75. Class A permits are valid on state routes only.
102 inches on interstate, federal-aid, and state highways per A.R.S. 28-1093.
13 feet 6 inches statewide legal height per A.R.S. 28-1094; up to 14 feet allowed without permit on the designated highway system, above 14 feet requires a single-trip permit.
Arkansas (AR)
Base fee of $17 per permit under Ark. Code Ann. 27-35-210; overweight moves add a per-ton mileage charge (for example $8 per ton at 100 miles or less, up to $16 per ton at 251+ miles).
Legal width is 102 inches (Ark. Code Ann. 27-35-206); legal height is 14 feet (Ark. Code Ann. 27-35-207, as amended by Act 871 of 2021, raised from 13 feet 6 inches).

California (CA)
Colorado (CO)
Single trip oversize permit is $15 plus a statutory surcharge equal to the permit fee (SB 09-108), for a total of $30. Single trip oversize/overweight is $15 plus $5 per axle, doubled by the surcharge to $30 plus $10 per axle. Annual oversize $250; annual overweight or OSOW $400; superload single trip $800.
Legal height limit is 14 ft 6 in, taller than the 13.5 or 14 ft typical elsewhere. Legal width 8 ft 6 in. Legal weight 80,000 lbs GVW on Interstates and 85,000 lbs on non-Interstate highways.
Connecticut (CT)
Base single-trip permit fee is $30.00 plus a $12.00 electronic transmittal fee ($42.00 total). Single-trip permits over 200,000 lb add an engineering analysis fee of $2.00 per 1,000 lb over 200,000 lb. Permit valid for one trip and return over a three-day period.
Legal width is 102 inches (8 ft 6 in) per CGS 14-262(a)(1); legal height is 13 ft 6 in per CGS 14-264. Loads exceeding these need a CTDOT special permit under CGS 14-270.
Governing rule: Conn. Gen. Stat. 14-262 (width), 14-264 (height), 14-270 (permits).
Delaware (DE)
DelDOT OSOW FAQ: minimum cost for a hauling permit is $30.00 ($60.00 for a superload, defined as length 120 ft, width 15 ft, height 15 ft, or gross weight over 120,000 lb). Permits are valid for five days. Overweight adds per-increment charges above the minimum.

District of Columbia (DC)
$30 one way, $50 roundtrip per single-haul move; annual tractor-trailer tag $85 (single-trip permit required instead if over 70 ft length, 13 ft 6 in height, or 8 ft 6 in width including load).
Governing rule: 18 DCMR Chapter 25 (axle and gross weight limits: 21,000 lb single axle, 34,000 lb tandem).
Florida (FL)
Base overdimension trip permit (10 days) is $5.00 for loads up to 12 ft wide, 13 ft 6 in high, or 85 ft long; $15.00 up to 14 ft wide / 14 ft 6 in high / 95 ft long; $25.00 above that (Rule 14-26.008, F.A.C., Table 1A). A $5.00 electronic transmission fee applies to certain permit types.
Legal height 13 ft 6 in generally; 14 ft for automobile transporters (s. 316.515, F.S., per FLHSMV size-and-permit enforcement).

Georgia (GA)
Standard single trip permit $30.00 (up to 16 ft width/height, up to 150,000 lb). Superload single $125.00; Superload Plus and Mega Load $500.00; standard annual $150.00; NHS annual $500.00.
Legal limits before a permit is required: width 8 ft 6 in, height 13 ft 6 in, length 100 ft including overhang, 80,000 lb gross weight (DPS Oversize Permit Unit guidelines, issued under Georgia Code Title 32 and GDOT Board Rule 672-2).
Hawaii (HI)
HAR section 19-104-13 fee schedule: $5 single-trip permit for loads less than 1.35 times the allowable load or less than 14 ft wide; $10 continuous-operation permit at the same thresholds; $25 for an overweight permit in excess of 1.35 times the allowable load; $25 for an oversize permit for width in excess of 14 ft. The current HIDOT Highways Division permit page confirms the fee varies from $5.00 to $25.00; applications on form DOT 4-005 to the district engineer.
Legal maximums per HAR section 19-104-14(b): width 9 ft (unusually, wider than the 8.5 ft standard elsewhere), height 13 ft 6 in, single vehicle 40 ft, truck-tractor and semitrailer 58 ft, truck and full trailer 65 ft. Escort required for widths exceeding 12 ft; permits normally issued for widths up to 14 ft.

Idaho (ID)
Illinois (IL)
Lowest single-trip over-dimension fee: $12 (Category a: up to 10 ft wide, 14 ft 6 in high, 70 ft long, 0 to 90 miles), scaling to $125 for the largest category over 270 miles, per IDOT Table 1 (fee authority 625 ILCS 5/15-304).
Legal limits: width 8 ft 6 in (625 ILCS 5/15-102), height 13 ft 6 in (625 ILCS 5/15-103).

Indiana (IN)
Base single-trip oversize permit fee is $20 (up to 95 ft long, 12 ft 4 in wide, and/or 13 ft 6 in tall); $30 or $40 for larger dimension tiers. DOR fee schedule dated 10/22/2021, still linked from the DOR OSOW pages.

Iowa (IA)
Kansas (KS)
K.S.A. 8-1911 fees on and after January 1, 2020: $40 single trip, $200 annual, $200 single trip for a large structure, $200 single trip for a superload.
Legal limits before a permit is required: 8.5 ft width (K.S.A. 8-1902) and 14 ft height (K.S.A. 8-1904; 14.5 ft only for secured cylindrical hay bales).
Governing rule: K.S.A. 8-1911.
Kentucky (KY)
Single-trip OW/OD permit is $60 (fee set by KRS 189.270(2)), plus a 4% credit-card service fee or $3 ACH fee. Commodity-specific annual permits range from $80 (farm, under 14 ft wide) to $1,500 (manufactured home).
8 ft 6 in on Interstates, Parkways, and designated highways; 8 ft on non-designated highways.
13 ft 6 in legal height; car haulers are permitted 14 ft.

Louisiana (LA)
Oversize single trip permit is $10 per day / per trip per the DOTD Truck Permit Office fee page; overweight single trip permit pricing is determined by GVW and mileage under DOTD's overweight fee schedules.
Legal height is 13 ft 6 in on non-Interstate highways and 14 ft 0 in on Interstate highways per DOTD's Regulations for Trucks, Vehicles, and Loads; legal width is 102 inches exclusive of safety devices.
Maine (ME)
29-A M.R.S. sec. 2382 sets single-trip overlimit permit fees at not less than $6 nor more than $30 based on weight, height, length and width; the exact fee within that range is set by Secretary of State rule and no itemized schedule is published on the BMV overlimit page. Maine Turnpike oversize/overlength permits are separate ($10 plus toll).
29-A M.R.S. sec. 2380: maximum width 102 inches; maximum height 13 feet 6 inches.
Maryland (MD)
Base single-trip special hauling permit fee is $30, plus $5 for each additional ton of gross weight above the base bracket. COMAR 11.04.01.08 states $30 for the first 40 tons or less plus $5 per ton over 40 tons; the SHA Hauling Permit Manual describes $30 for loads under 90,000 lb with $5 per ton above 45 tons. The $30 base is consistent; the per-ton threshold differs between the regulation and the manual.
SHA Hauling Permit Manual lists 13 ft 6 in as the legal height limit and its permit-load width table begins at 8 ft. Route survey certification required for heights over 14 ft 6 in.
Massachusetts (MA)
MassDOT does not publish a public single-trip permit fee schedule; fees are quoted inside the OASIS permitting system. Not confirmed on a primary source, so left null.
No permit needed at or under 8 ft 6 in wide and 13 ft 6 in high. Boston tunnel routes are lower: Callahan and Sumner Tunnels max 12 ft 6 in. Governing regulation: 700 CMR 8.00.
Michigan (MI)
$15 for a single-trip permit that is over-dimension only and legal in weight; $50 if the load is over-dimension and/or over legal axle weight. Extended (annual) permits: $30/yr oversize, $100/yr overweight (MDOT T-2 and MDOT oversize/overweight FAQ).
MCL 257.717(4): maximum 102 inches (8.5 ft) measured wheel-to-wheel outside tire to outside tire; body or load width capped at 96 inches (8 ft), with 108-inch allowances for specific commodities such as unprocessed logs and agricultural products.
MCL 257.719(1): 13 feet 6 inches loaded or unloaded. Permit applicants exceeding 13'6" must verify vertical clearance on the proposed route (MDOT T-2).
Minnesota (MN)
Mississippi (MS)
Flat $10 oversize single-trip permit. Oversize blanket $100/year; Special Heavy Haul blanket $4,500 (up to 150,000 lb, width to 14 ft).
Legal width 8 ft 6 in exclusive of safety devices (Miss. Code Ann. Sec. 63-5-13); legal height 13 ft 6 in (Miss. Code Ann. Sec. 63-5-17). Structures need only accommodate 12 ft 6 in; vehicles over that height bear full liability for structure strikes.

Missouri (MO)
Single trip oversize permit is $15 (7 CSR 10-25.020(4)); loads over 16 ft wide, 16 ft high, or 150 ft long add a $250 movement feasibility fee; single trip overweight is $15 plus $20 per 10,000 lb over legal gross weight.
Legal height is 13.5 ft on most highways but 14 ft on the interstate system and commission-designated routes; auto-transporters may run 14 ft anywhere (RSMo 304.170). Legal width is 102 inches (8.5 ft).
Montana (MT)
Single trip oversize permit is $10.00; term (annual) oversize is $75.00; single trip overweight-on-bridge is $10.00 to $50.00 by route mileage. Per MDT MT Permitting Reference and FAQs, updated 01/27/2026.
Legal without permit: width 8 ft 6 in, height 14 ft 0 in, length 75 ft for truck and trailer combinations (53 ft trailer).
Nebraska (NE)
Nevada (NV)
NAC 484D.635(1)(a): single-trip permits are $25. Annual multiple-trip permits are $60; replacement of a lost annual permit is $10.
Legal maximum width of any vehicle, combination, or load is 102 inches (NRS 484D.600(3)). Single-trip permit loads may run up to 14 ft wide without special approval (NAC 484D.655).
NRS 484D.605(1): 14 ft legal maximum height including load (baled hay excepted at 15 ft). Permitted single-trip loads may reach 15 ft (NAC 484D.655).
New Hampshire (NH)
Statutory fee: $6 per single-trip permit for over-length, over-width, or over-height or any combination (RSA 266:22, I, as amended eff. July 1, 2023). State of Oregon single-trip over-dimension permit administrative fee is $8.00 per Form 735-9973 (CCD Administrative Fees for OD Permits, revised 01-2023); annual CTP and COVP permits are also $8.00 at the state level (county fees vary on the same chart). ORS 818.270(1) caps the single-trip variance permit fee a road authority may charge at $8.

Motor Carrier Handbook Ch. 6: 'Single-Trip permits may be purchased individually or in books of ten for $25 per permit.' Excess overweight adds two cents per ton-mile for the excess weight. 'Oversize/overweight permits must be secured before moving the combination or entering the state.'

Overweight loads add a highway maintenance fee by gross weight: $150 (80,001-120,000 lb), $225 (120,001-160,000 lb), $300 (160,001-200,000 lb), $375 (over 200,000 lb). UDOT issues oversize/overweight permits on a single trip, semi-annual, or annual basis (Utah Admin. Rule R909-2); the dollar fee schedule is not published on the fetched UDOT provisions pages. Loads exceeding 17 ft 6 in high, 17 ft wide, or 300,000 lbs are processed business hours only and may take up to 14 days.

Oversize permits are per-move paperwork, separate from the registrations a carrier holds year-round. Before a heavy-haul truck rolls, the company behind it needs its operating authority, plates apportioned under IRP registration, and a fuel-tax license under IFTA. Heavy loads also intersect the four weight-distance tax states, which tax the same miles the permit authorizes.

How much does an oversize permit cost?
- Published single-trip base fees run from $5 (Florida, Hawaii) to $75 (Ohio). 48 of the 51 jurisdictions publish a flat base fee on an official source; the other 3 quote fees inside their permitting systems. Overweight moves usually add weight- or mile-based charges on top of the base fee.
When do I need an oversize permit?
- You need one whenever a load exceeds the state's legal size limits. 49 of the 51 jurisdictions set legal width at 8 ft 6 in, and legal height is 13 ft 6 in in most of the country. A load inside every legal limit needs no permit at all, and a load crossing three states needs a permit from each of the three.
Why do some states say "varies, see agency"?
- Maine, Massachusetts, Utah do not publish a flat single-trip fee on an official source. Their systems quote the fee per move, or a statute sets a range and the exact amount comes by rule. We link the issuing agency instead of guessing a number.
Is the base fee the whole cost of a permit?
- Usually not. The base fee covers a legal-dimension review of one move. States commonly add weight-tier surcharges for overweight loads, per-mile charges, escort or pilot-car requirements for wider loads, and sometimes county or toll-road fees. Read the state notes below the table before budgeting a move.
Who issues oversize permits?
- The state DOT in most jurisdictions, but not all. Some states route permits through the Department of Public Safety, the Highway Patrol, the Department of Revenue, or the DMV. The agency column in the table names the office and links its permit page for each state.
