Reading the matrix
USD per gallon (the U.S. line of the IFTA matrix). Alternative-fuel rates for some jurisdictions are per gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE) or diesel gallon equivalent (DGE) per that jurisdiction's footnote on the matrix page.
Published on the 3Q2026 matrix as 'Exchange Rate*: U.S.= 1.3984 / Canada = 0.7151', sourced by IFTA Inc. from www.federalreserve.gov. Per IFTA procedure P1020 the rate is the U.S. Federal Reserve Board index rate at noon Eastern time on the third Monday of the month immediately preceding the quarter.
Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia also publish a separate surcharge line. Surcharge jurisdiction: this amount is reported and paid on the IFTA return in addition to the base rate; it is not collected at the pump.
A null rate means the jurisdiction publishes no rate for that fuel type in the IFTA matrix (blank cell as published). No cell was unreadable; nothing was estimated.
Put the rates to work
Looking up one rate rarely answers the real question, which is what the quarter will cost. Feed your miles and gallons into the IFTA calculator and it applies these same store rates jurisdiction by jurisdiction. For a fixed side-by-side of the states most carriers run, the IFTA rates by state page lays out the US and Canadian tables without filters.
Fuel tax rides on top of the rest of the compliance stack: apportioned plates in the IRP registration comparison, the mileage taxes in the four weight-distance tax states, and the annual UCR fee. New carriers should start at how to get your own authority.
Frequently asked questions
How current are these IFTA tax rates?
- The browser shows the 3Q 2026 matrix, effective Jul 1, 2026 through Sep 30, 2026. IFTA Inc. states this matrix is not final until September 4, 2026. Jurisdictions may still post 3Q2026 updates; matrix page last updated 2026-07-17 (14 jurisdictions updated, 4 rate changes). Re-verify after the finality date and at the quarterly refresh.
What does a blank cell in the matrix mean?
- A null rate means the jurisdiction publishes no rate for that fuel type in the IFTA matrix (blank cell as published). No cell was unreadable; nothing was estimated.
Which fuel types can I filter by?
- The matrix publishes 15 fuel type columns, from gasoline and special diesel through propane, LNG, CNG, and the alcohol blends. Most carriers only need the special diesel column; the rest exist because member jurisdictions tax alternative fuels on their own lines.
Why do the Canadian provinces show US dollar rates?
- The matrix converts every Canadian rate into US dollars per gallon with the exchange rate IFTA Inc. publishes for the quarter, so a US-based return applies one consistent unit. The conversion note above the table cites the published exchange rate line.
Which jurisdictions are missing from the matrix?
- Alaska, Hawaii, and District of Columbia. They are not IFTA members, publish no rates, and appear in the table as non-member rows so you never mistake a missing rate for a zero rate.
