IFTA calculator

Enter the miles you ran and the gallons you bought in each IFTA jurisdiction, and this calculator estimates your quarterly fuel tax from the official 3Q 2026 rate matrix, effective Jul 1, 2026 through Sep 30, 2026. It is a planning estimate, not a filing document: your base state return is the official math.

Quarterly estimate, 3Q 2026 rates

Estimate only, not a return

Jurisdictions that publish no Special Diesel rate are left out of the list.

Pick a jurisdiction, then enter miles and gallons. The estimate appears here once the fleet has both total miles and total gallons.

Your base jurisdiction's return is the official calculation. Rates here are the 3Q 2026 matrix values; each rate links to its source.

How the estimate is built

IFTA settles fuel tax on where you burned fuel, not where you bought it. The return divides your total miles by your total gallons to get a fleet MPG, splits your fuel burn across jurisdictions by miles, and charges each jurisdiction's own rate on that burn. Tax you already paid at the pump comes back as a credit, so a state where you fueled heavily can net out as a refund.

USD per gallon (the U.S. line of the IFTA matrix). Alternative-fuel rates for some jurisdictions are per gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE) or diesel gallon equivalent (DGE) per that jurisdiction's footnote on the matrix page.

IFTA Inc. states this matrix is not final until September 4, 2026. Jurisdictions may still post 3Q2026 updates; matrix page last updated 2026-07-17 (14 jurisdictions updated, 4 rate changes). Re-verify after the finality date and at the quarterly refresh.

What the estimate leaves out

The calculator covers one fuel type at a time and the published matrix rates, nothing else. Your real return can differ on penalties, interest, credits carried forward, tax-exempt miles, and reefer fuel. Rates also change every quarter: browse the full matrix on the IFTA tax rates browser or the IFTA rates by state comparison before you file.

Fuel tax is one line in a heavy truck's recurring paperwork. Miles in Kentucky, New Mexico, New York, and Oregon also feed a separate mileage tax, estimated with the weight-distance tax calculator. The same truck usually carries apportioned plates through IRP registration, owes the annual highway use tax on Form 2290, and pays the yearly UCR fee.

Frequently asked questions

How does this IFTA calculator work?

It follows the return math. Your total miles divided by your total gallons sets the fleet MPG. Each jurisdiction is charged on the gallons you burned there (miles divided by fleet MPG) at its own rate, and the fuel tax you already paid at the pump there counts as a credit. The per-jurisdiction results are summed into one net figure.

Which rates does the calculator use?

It uses the 3Q 2026 IFTA tax rate matrix published by IFTA Inc., covering Jul 1, 2026 through Sep 30, 2026. Every rate on this site renders from one stored copy of that matrix, refreshed each quarter, and each rendered rate links to the source.

Is the result what I will owe on my quarterly return?

Treat it as a planning estimate. Your base jurisdiction processes the official return, which can add penalties, interest, credits carried forward, and jurisdiction-level rounding rules. Split fuel types, reefer fuel, and tax-exempt miles also change the real filing.

Does the estimate include surcharges?

Yes, where the matrix publishes one. A few jurisdictions list a separate surcharge line that is paid on the return, on the gallons you burned there, with no pump credit. When your chosen fuel has a published surcharge in a jurisdiction you entered, the calculator adds it as its own column.

Can I enter miles in Alaska, Hawaii, or Washington DC?

No. Alaska, Hawaii, and District of Columbia are not IFTA member jurisdictions and publish no rates in the matrix, so the calculator leaves them out. Miles there are handled outside the IFTA return.
